Norm Whiteman, 1949 – 2017 LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL OFFICER, SMOHIT TRUSTEE Norman L. Whiteman, a recent member of SMART’s General Executive Council, passed away April 6, 2017. He was elected Business Manager/Financial Secretary-Treasurer of Dallas SM Local 68 in 2007. Just six weeks later, Local 68 had a huge arson fire. Whiteman led the reconstruction of the local’s new look and oversaw building of a new training center to expand member skills and opportunities. Unopposed in 2010, Norm served a second term as BM/FST and finished 25 years of service in good standing. Then-GP Joe Nigro later named him 10th General Vice President; he was voted 8th G.V.P. in 2014 at the first SMART General Convention. His devotion to members showed as he became a labor trustee of the Sheet Metal Occupational Health Institute Trust fund in the 1990s. His efforts and work with other trustees have helped SMOHIT become an industry leader and resource for all union sheet metal workers. Norm was passionate that health and safety decisions be made in the best interest of the members. He even used his own fight with cancer to promote SMOHIT Job-Hazard screening, which alerted him to high PSA levels; he told his family doctor and learned he had prostate cancer. Norm knew, and let many others know, that screening let him detect the cancer and start treatment early, which he felt extended his life. SMOHIT director Randy Krocka said that despite health issues, Norm always had a smile or a joke to share. And he loved poker. “If you had the chance to enjoy a game with him, you probably laughed, had a great, time—and left with a little less money than he did,” Krocka said. “Norm will be missed, but his legacy will live forever.” SMART General President Sellers called him “a natural leader who always put the rank-and-file first and foremost, an effective member of the GEC who served our members with honor and distinction.”
